Description

This 1840s era hand-drawn map shows iron ore deposits south of the Ocoee River and west of Silco Creek and other ores and mineral deposits east of Silco Creek. The mineral deposits are color coded with keys on the left and right side of the map. Polk County was the center of early copper mining during this period, as well as a gold mining on the Conosauga River, pictured on this map crossing the Georgia state line.

Edward Bayer was a wealthy banker from Brooklyn, New York who purchased land in Polk, McMinn and Monroe counties. He and his wife, Adele, were integral in recruiting immigrants to move to and settle in East Tennessee.
