Polk County was established in 1839 from parts of Bradley and McMinn counties. It was named for sitting Governor James K. Polk. Its county seat and largest city is Benton, named for United States Senator Thomas Hart Benton. Copper was discovered in Ducktown, Polk County in 1843, which sparked major mining operations in the region. Agriculture and the Tennessee Valley Authority provide the majority of the populace with work.
